Case dismissed: State of TN vs. Justin Gholson

7/30/2018

One of Heard Law's partners, attorney Mark Kovach, successfully argued for a dismissal today in the case of State of Tennessee vs. Justin Gholson. The defendant was charged with criminal homicide in early May after a fatal shooting in Opry Mills Mall. Mark argued that his client acted in self-defense, and after a careful review of the evidence, the state was convinced to dismiss the case against Gholson. This dismissal is a huge win for both attorney and client, as well as Heard Law Group as a whole, and we're proud to celebrate Mark's accomplishment today.

Want to get to know Elaine (Laney) Heard Cuthbertson, the founding member of Heard Law? Check out our interview below to learn more about Laney, her love of animals, and her passion for art history!

Tell us about yourself!

I'm originally from Tampa, Florida, but I went to undergrad at Vanderbilt University and law school at the University of Miami. I took the Florida bar in 2008, and then the Tennessee bar in 2009, and I decided to move back to Tennessee and open up my own firm. I've been here for close to ten years!
What are some of your biggest interests outside of law?
I minored in art history during undergrad, with a concentration on Italian art during the Baroque period, and it turned out to be one of the loves of my life. I actually speak French, and I lived in London for a little while to pursue my art history studies there. I've also always loved animals. I originally considered becoming a vet before I made the decision to go to law school. During law school, I worked at a zoo in Miami and helped raise baby orangutans! Ultimately, I became a pet mom as well as a lawyer.
Tell us about your pets!
I have a black lab named Quigley, and four cats: Roxie, Yoda, Coco, and Monroe. They like to come hang out and chill at the office sometimes; they're very friendly!
What do you love about the Nashville area?
I love that it's a big city that still feels like a small town. It has plenty to offer, and the people are very warm and welcoming.
